Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services
Prerequisite: None Course Description: The Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services program is a 12-hour course designed to enable EMS providers to better asses and deliver state of the art care to the elderly. Topics covered in this course include: Physiological and psychosocial aspects of aging; Geriatric pharmacology; communication; assessment; trauma; musculoskeletal and orthopedic injuries; cardiovascular emergencies, neurological and psychiatric emergencies; toxicology; abuse, neglect, dying and death. Materials Needed for Class: Bring a pen or pencil, a note pad, and a lunch (if needed). Additional Information: The portion of the aged in society today is greater than ever before and growing faster than any other segment of the population. Approx. 34% of all calls for emergency medical service, or 3.4 million emergency responses involve patients over the age of 60. |
